Very, very, very, very, very dumb people

I turned on some cartoons this morning and Direct TV decided for us that my kids should be watching the NRA guy on CNN burble out preposterous ideas and spew disgustingly undereducated and nonsensical rhetoric out of his televised orifices.

Taken from Slate,

“The National Rifle Association broke its week-long silence this morning to call on lawmakers to offer an armed guard to each and every school in America to prevent tragic school shootings like the one that killed 26 people in Newtown last week.

“‘The only way to stop a monster from killing our kids is to be personally involved and invested in a plan of absolute protection,” CEO and executive VP Wayne LaPierre said at high-profile and combative press conference in Washington, D.C. “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.'”

Oh yes. Fab. Public schools can’t afford TEACHERS, but you want to pay some guy to stand around every school in America? Oh and yes, NAIVE ONES, there are “good guys” and “bad guys”. Everything is totally black and white. I’d love to see the very thorough vetting process to find “good guys” ready to work for minimum wage to stand outside of school with a gun. I’d feel so much safer sending my kid to school under the protection of a “good guy” who went to Iraq and Afghanistan and was denied mental health benefits and so suffers from undiagnosed PTSD and decides to take out the first pimple-faced thirteen-year-old boy who happens to give him the bird one day after gym class.

And there’s no crazy “bad guys” with scopes out there who could take the “good guy” out right? Because the “good guy”, working for minimum wage and standing around, waiting day after day, is going to be able to have his eyes on every bush and every rooftop at every angle, all of the time.

Guess what? Guns are the problem. Period. It’s not video games. It’s not movies. It’s not that our country is more inherently violent. It’s that we have the most ridiculously lax gun laws of any economically advanced country, and therefore have the most gun deaths. There’s a direct correlation.

It’s looking like the President will do something to reinstitute the assault gun ban. Good first step. I’d like to see guns and ammo banned outright. Will that immediately work? No. People would go all “Hostess Twinkie” on guns. For a while. But eventually it would get better.

Do we need to look at mental health accessibility as well? Absolutely. A complex problem needs to be solved in a multi-faceted way.

When I was a kid, no one every thought there would be a black president, or a female Secretary of State, or legalized gay marriage, or legalized marijuana. But it’s happening. This country is starting to wake up. Maybe when my kids are older, they’ll live in a country that isn’t constantly devastated, over and over again by mass murders.

Oh, your Second Amendment rights? Constitutional Amendment please!!! I don’t care if you like going out and shooting animals. I don’t care if that’s super fun for you. What about my kid’s rights to go to school and not get murdered? What about their rights? What’s more important?

Oh, you think a bunch of gun-hoarding yokels in the mountains should be able to overthrow a corrupt government? Guess what. Not gonna happen. I’m betting one bazillion dollars that you could search throughout all of Idaho, Texas and Kentucky and not come up with anything resembling a “well regulated militia”. They are nothing against tanks and drones. Am I regionally biased? Absolutely.

Let’s start using our heads and put our priorities where they should be. Please?

Thank you.
